John Montagu (1718-1792)
was the 4th Earl of Sandwich, a shrewd statesman, and an accomplished
storyteller. He was both a cagey gambler and an epicure who loved
the sporting life. Because he never left the gaming table to eat,
and was ever disdainful of a mess while gambling, he invented the
sandwich as we know it today-- two slices of bread with filling
in between. The Earl wanted to be free to gamble with one hand and
eat with the other without spoiling his finery.
But anybody can put two pieces of bread together. However, Kangaroo
